The first, major part of “Her Majesty’s Top Gun” takes the reader on the long and exhilarating journey of the author from boyhood to the fulfilment of his dream: leading his Squadron into combat and engaging the enemy ever more closely. The part he played in the generation of the Sea Harrier All Weather Fighter, its preparation for combat and his personal contribution to the Falklands War victory, has drawn much acclaim from his superiors, his peers, and other commentators.
The second, shorter part of the book concerning “The Decline of the Royal Navy” reveals how a disingenuous and dishonest propaganda campaign led to a sustained assault on and unwarranted decline in the size and capability of our Fleet and the near emasculation of the Fleet Air Arm and its global influence.
It highlights the fortitude and dedication with which Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm aviators and engineers withstood many challenges to their very existence. It describes in detail the uncomfortable reality of the less than honest, fraudulent, and sustained propaganda campaign within the corridors of power in London that decimated Britain’s well proven Strategic Maritime Capability upon which our very prosperity and survival depends. This also threatened the much-needed development of U.K.’s future war leaders and Top Guns.
For more than 50 years, a sustained campaign at the hands of the Royal Air Force denigrated the Fleet Air Arm and misled the Government over the utility, flexibility and effectiveness of land-based Strategic Maritime Power. The text reveals inordinate Defence Budget spending on land-based tactical fighter aircraft that have little, if any, strategic justification when balanced against the perceived global threats that now face us.
The book is clear: generations of our political masters have been grievously misled. But Fleet Air Arm personnel have stood proud in the service of the Queen hoping that eventually historical achievement, military logic, and common sense would return to Whitehall and the Government.
Unfortunately, and as the year 2024 dawns, intense global unrest and chaos within the Ministry of Defence has ensured that our masters in Whitehall still pay scant regard to declared Strategic Maritime Policy and, as a result, we in our Island Nation are standing into danger.
